## 1\. Executive summary

A flaw in the preview pane of Claude Code Desktop lets an attacker read developer credentials without user interaction, according to Dark Reading. The reported exposure covers SSH private keys, AWS credentials, and Claude OAuth tokens held on developer endpoints. No CVE, CVSS score, or CISA KEV entry is available in the source material, and no vendor advisory or patch version is named, so the technical detail below is limited to what the reporting states. The risk to EMEA financial services sits with engineering and platform teams running Claude Code Desktop on workstations that also hold production cloud and SSH credentials.

## 2\. Regulatory framing

No specific DORA/NIS2 article is directly engaged by this item. The source names no affected entity, no confirmed incident, and no exploited deployment, so there is no trigger fact that would change a client's obligations under the articles in scope. Treat this as a vulnerability to assess against your own exposure, not as a reportable event.

## 3\. Technical analysis & attack chain

The source describes a single mechanism: a bug in the preview pane of Claude Code Desktop that can allow an adversary to quietly steal credentials from developers. The credentials named are SSH private keys, AWS credentials, and Claude OAuth tokens. The reporting calls the flaw a silent zero-click threat, meaning the credential theft is described as occurring without the developer taking an action to trigger it.

The source does not provide the following, and this advisory does not fill the gaps: the affected Claude Code Desktop versions, the underlying vulnerability class, the exact preview-pane component or code path, the exfiltration channel, any persistence or privilege-escalation behaviour, or a vendor fix or version. There is no CVE identifier, no CVSS score, and no CISA KEV entry in the material provided. An analyst cannot build a confirmed step-by-step attack chain from this source alone.

A related but distinct issue is documented in the Microsoft Threat Intelligence research on the Claude Code GitHub Action. That work covers a CI/CD context, not the desktop preview pane, and should not be conflated with the SneakPeek flaw. Microsoft found that while Claude Code Action applied environment scrubbing to subprocess execution paths such as Bash, the Read tool was not subject to the same sandboxing and was eventually authorized to access `/proc/self/environ`, reading the workflow's `ANTHROPIC_API_KEY` and potentially other credentials available to the runner. Anthropic mitigated that issue in Claude Code version 2.1.128 by blocking access to sensitive `/proc` files. Microsoft also observed prompt injection attempts in public repositories using AI-assisted GitHub workflows across multiple vendors, where attacker-controlled issue or PR content is processed by the AI agent and can influence its tool use. In one example the injection payload was placed inside an HTML comment, invisible when the issue renders in a browser but visible to the model reading the raw markdown, and instructed the bot to locate a target documentation file, append an invisible XSS image tag, and open a pull request to commit the poisoned file. Had that PR merged, rendering the documentation site would execute JavaScript on visitors' machines to exfiltrate session tokens to an attacker endpoint.

The Microsoft research is single-sourced to that vendor blog. The 2.1.128 fix and the `/proc/self/environ` read path are Microsoft's account; verify against Anthropic's own release notes before relying on them. The Microsoft material describes a different product surface (GitHub Action) from the Dark Reading item (Desktop preview pane), and no source states that the two share a root cause.

## 4\. Mitigation & containment

The source names no vendor fix for the SneakPeek flaw, so the steps below are exposure reduction, not remediation. Confirm the current Claude Code Desktop version and any Anthropic advisory before acting.

P1 (within 24h)

- Inventory which developer and platform workstations run Claude Code Desktop, and record the installed version. The source gives no affected version range, so treat all installed versions as unverified until Anthropic publishes guidance.
- On those hosts, identify where SSH private keys, AWS credentials, and Claude OAuth tokens are stored and whether they are reachable from the desktop application's process context. Rotate any credential that has been present on a host running the desktop client where you cannot rule out exposure.
- If you cannot confirm the flaw is fixed in your installed version, disable or restrict the preview pane feature, or remove the desktop client from hosts that hold production credentials, until a vendor fix is available.

P2 (within 72h)

- Move developer access to production AWS and SSH away from long-lived static credentials on endpoints toward short-lived, scoped credentials where your tooling allows it, so a single endpoint read yields less.
- Apply the Microsoft-documented control for the separate GitHub Action issue: upgrade Claude Code to version 2.1.128 or later, which Microsoft reports blocks access to sensitive `/proc` files. Verify this against Anthropic's release notes, as the fix is single-sourced to Microsoft.
- For any AI-assisted GitHub workflow that processes untrusted content (issue bodies, PR descriptions, comments), review whether the agent has file-read tools, secret access, or external communication channels. Microsoft's guidance is to treat such workflows as high-risk when those three are combined.

P3 (within 7 days)

- Add detection for reads of `/proc/self/environ` and other sensitive `/proc` paths by AI agent processes on CI runners and developer hosts (see §6).
- Review GitHub Actions workflows that trigger on issue or comment events and grant an AI bot write or PR-creation capability, and remove that capability where it is not required.

## 5\. Indicators of compromise

No indicators of compromise available in the source material. Neither source provides hashes, domains, IP addresses, file paths, or registry keys tied to the SneakPeek flaw.

The sources do describe observable behaviours. These are not atomic indicators and are not for the copyable block.

### Behavioural indicators

| behaviour | where to observe | confidence |

| AI agent process reads sensitive /proc files | CI runner process/file-access telemetry; EDR file-read events | single-sourced (Microsoft) |
| Prompt injection payload embedded in an HTML comment in an issue or PR body | GitHub issue/PR raw markdown; audit of agent-processed content | single-sourced (Microsoft) |
| AI bot opens a pull request that appends an invisible XSS image tag to a documentation file | GitHub pull request history; CI/CD audit log | single-sourced (Microsoft) |

## 6\. Detection

The sources give usable artefacts for the GitHub Action issue (the `/proc/self/environ` read path and the HTML-comment injection pattern) but none for the Desktop preview-pane flaw. The rules below target the Microsoft-documented behaviour and are single-sourced; validate against your environment before enforcement.

## 8\. Adverse Trace position

Adverse Trace assesses the SneakPeek flaw as a credential-exposure risk to developer endpoints, not a confirmed exploitation event, and we are not assigning a severity because the source provides no CVE, CVSS score, or CISA KEV state to anchor one. The reporting is single-sourced to Dark Reading and gives no affected versions or vendor fix, so the practical impact depends entirely on whether a given client runs Claude Code Desktop on hosts that hold production SSH keys, AWS credentials, or Claude OAuth tokens. The Microsoft research is a separate, single-sourced issue on the GitHub Action surface and should be treated as its own exposure. We will track Anthropic's advisory and release notes for an affected-version range and a fix, and update this note when either is published; clients should confirm their installed desktop version and rotate any credential that has sat on an affected host.
