MongoDB C# Driver flaws allow RCE and DoS

Jeff Davies 23 Oct 2026 5 min read

1. Executive summary

BSI's Warn- und Informationsdienst published WID-SEC-2026-4126 on 23 October 2026, rating multiple vulnerabilities in the MongoDB C# driver as medium severity. The advisory states that an attacker can exploit the flaws to execute arbitrary code, cause a denial of service, disclose information and bypass security controls. No CVE identifiers, affected version ranges, CVSS scores or vendor fix versions are given in the source, and no CVE has been resolved against this item, so the individual flaws cannot be triaged by identifier or severity. The exposure is to any .NET application that uses the MongoDB C# driver to reach a MongoDB deployment, which in EMEA financial services typically means internal tooling, reporting services and back-office applications rather than internet-facing systems. The practical risk is a supply-chain one: the vulnerable component is a library embedded in application builds, so remediation depends on rebuilding and redeploying dependent applications, not on patching a server.

2. Regulatory framing

No specific DORA/NIS2 article is directly engaged by this item.

3. Technical analysis & attack chain

The source describes the impact categories but not the mechanism. What is confirmed is limited to the following.

  1. A vulnerable version of the MongoDB C# driver is present in a .NET application that connects to a MongoDB deployment.
  2. An attacker supplies crafted input that reaches the driver, either through the application's own interfaces or through data the application reads from the database.
  3. The driver mishandles that input, and depending on which flaw is triggered the result is arbitrary code execution, denial of service, information disclosure or a bypass of security controls.

That is the whole of the confirmed chain. The source does not name the vulnerable functions, the wire protocol messages involved, the authentication state required, or whether exploitation needs prior access to the database or only to the application. It also does not say whether the flaws are in the driver's BSON serialisation, its connection and TLS handling, its authentication mechanisms or its query building. Analysts should not assume a network-facing vector; several of the impact categories listed (code execution, control bypass) are consistent with deserialisation or input-validation faults reachable from application code, but the source does not establish this and it should be treated as unknown until the MongoDB security advisories for the affected driver versions are reviewed.

The related BSI advisories in the same period cover the MongoDB server itself (WID-SEC-2026-2487, WID-SEC-2026-2818, WID-SEC-2026-2794, WID-SEC-2026-3182), other language drivers including the Python, PHP and C drivers plus Compass and Laravel (WID-SEC-2026-3583), and the BI Connector and ODBC driver (WID-SEC-2026-3082). Read together they indicate a run of driver and connector vulnerabilities disclosed across the MongoDB stack in late 2026. They are separate advisories with separate flaw sets; nothing in the sources shows the C# driver flaws are the same issues as those in the other drivers, and they should not be conflated when scoping remediation. The pattern does mean that an estate with several MongoDB client libraries in use should expect to run this triage more than once.

No exploitation in the wild is reported in any of the sources. No threat actor is named. No malware, payload, persistence mechanism, command-and-control channel or post-exploitation behaviour is described, because this is a vulnerability disclosure and not an incident report. There are no indicators to hunt on beyond the vulnerable component itself.

4. Mitigation & containment

P1 (within 24 hours)

  • Inventory every .NET application and service that references the MongoDB C# driver (MongoDB.Driver NuGet package). Search source repositories and built artefacts for the package reference and record the resolved version. Include internal tools, scheduled jobs and reporting services, not only customer-facing applications.
  • Where an application using the driver is internet-facing or processes untrusted input into database queries, treat it as the priority. The source gives no affected version range, so any version in use is unconfirmed until checked against MongoDB's own advisory for the C# driver. Do not assume a version is fixed without that confirmation.

P2 (within 72 hours)

  • Obtain the fixed driver version from MongoDB's security advisory pages and the NuGet release notes. The BSI advisory names no fix version, so the vendor is the only authoritative source for the version to move to.
  • Rebuild and redeploy affected applications against the fixed driver. A NuGet package update alone does not remediate a deployed application; the binary must be rebuilt and the deployment replaced.
  • Pin the driver version in project files and central package management so that a rebuild does not silently restore the vulnerable version.

P3 (within 7 days)

  • Add the MongoDB C# driver to the software composition analysis baseline and to the dependency-update process, so future driver advisories are caught by version rather than by reading BSI bulletins.
  • Review the same dependency inventory for the other MongoDB client libraries named in the related advisories (Python, PHP, C drivers, Compass, Laravel, BI Connector, ODBC driver) and schedule equivalent checks against their vendor advisories.

Containment options are limited because the flaw is in a client library rather than a network service. Restricting which applications can reach the MongoDB deployment, and enforcing least-privilege database accounts for each application, reduces the impact of a control bypass or information disclosure but does not remove the code execution path. No vendor workaround is given in the source.

5. Indicators of compromise

No indicators of compromise available in the source material.

The only actionable artefact is the vulnerable component itself: the MongoDB C# driver (MongoDB.Driver NuGet package) at an unconfirmed version. The source gives no version numbers, file hashes, network indicators or behavioural signatures, so no atomic indicator table or copyable block can be produced. Detection must be built on component inventory rather than on IOCs.

6. Detection

Insufficient indicators to author detection rules.

The source contains no strings, file paths, command-line flags, registry keys or behavioural artefacts specific to these flaws. A YARA or Sigma rule built from the advisory would only match the advisory text or the product name, not the vulnerability, so none is offered. The usable detection is dependency-based: flag any build or deployed artefact that resolves the MongoDB.Driver NuGet package to a version below the fix published by MongoDB, once that fix version is confirmed.

8. Adverse Trace position

Adverse Trace assesses this as a medium-severity supply-chain exposure, matching BSI's rating, with the caveat that the rating rests on a single source that gives no CVE identifiers, no CVSS scores and no affected version range. No CVE has been resolved against this item and no exploitation in the wild is reported, so there is no basis to raise it above medium or to treat it as an active threat. The client impact is concentrated in .NET applications that embed the MongoDB C# driver: the fix is a rebuild and redeploy against a vendor-confirmed version, and the main failure mode is an application that is updated in source but not redeployed. We will pull the MongoDB security advisories for the C# driver to establish the affected and fixed versions, re-issue this note with CVE identifiers and CVSS scores once they are confirmed, and check whether the other MongoDB driver advisories in the same period share any flaw with this one. Clients who need the version data before then should go to MongoDB directly rather than wait for the next revision.
